Joy was taken to the children’s office by a community health worker, who rescued her and her older brother from a mother suffering with mental illness. Joy was said to be assaulted by her mother and was under the care of the grandmother who was ill and in a critical condition. Joy was brought to HLCH on 19 October 2009. Three weeks after admission, she was eating poorly and had a chest infection. She was then put on antibiotics for one week without improvement. Later, Joy was admitted to the hospital where she was put on oxygen for 1½ months in an intensive care unit. The doctors said her lungs had been badly infected and her hope of survival was minimal. By the grace of God, Joy miraculously recovered and she is now a healthy, lovely girl. She was taken for adoption on 18 December 2010 by a single Kenyan woman.
